One hundred million. Really.

What the number actually means.

The announcement concerns cumulative production of the Super Cub series, a family of motorcycles. It does not mean 100 million identical C90s, and it is not a count of bikes still being ridden. It is also a dated milestone, not a live production counter.

Honda marked the occasion at its Kumamoto factory, 59 years after the C100’s introduction. Its chronology places the ten-million milestone in 1974 and the fifty-million milestone in 2005.

The human scale of a huge total.

The number is spectacular; its meaning is more interesting. One motorcycle can widen the circle of places someone can reach. Multiply that possibility across years and places, without pretending every owner has the same story.

The basket of bananas in our photograph makes a lovely counterweight to the statistic. It gives the machine a job. Somewhere inside that enormous production history are errands this specific: a basket to fill, a place to reach, something to bring home.

The family kept changing.

The chronology contains smaller landmarks too. The C65 introduced an overhead-cam engine in 1964; the OHC C50 followed in 1966. Later came the Press Cub in 1988 and Little Cub in 1997. Fuel injection reached the Super Cub 50, Press Cub 50 and Little Cub in 2007.

Those names interrupt the tempting idea of a single design rolling off a line unchanged for decades. The family adapted to work, riders and new technology. Keeping a recognisable outline did not mean the engineering stood still.

The date remains attached to the headline: October 2017. It is a historical production milestone, and a particularly good point from which to look back at the many smaller changes that made it possible.
