CHAPTER 04 / MILESTONES

One hundred million. Really.

An enormous number for a motorcycle that gets on with the small things.

On 19 October 2017, Honda announced that cumulative worldwide production of the Super Cub series had reached 100 million. Pause on that. Then picture just one of those bikes, leaning on its stand at the end of the day.

What the number actually means.

The announcement concerns cumulative production of the Super Cub series, a family of motorcycles. It does not mean 100 million identical C90s, and it is not a count of bikes still being ridden. It is also a dated milestone, not a live production counter.

Honda marked the occasion at its Kumamoto factory, 59 years after the C100’s introduction. Its chronology places the ten-million milestone in 1974 and the fifty-million milestone in 2005.

Source notes [1]

The human scale of a huge total.

The number is spectacular; its meaning is more interesting. One motorcycle can widen the circle of places someone can reach. Multiply that possibility across years and places, without pretending every owner has the same story.

The sunset photograph here makes a nice counterweight to the statistic. It shows a single C90 in Horsforth in 2013. A production total is abstract. A small machine at the end of a lane is wonderfully specific.

A date worth keeping attached.

Throughout the club, “100 million” refers to Honda’s October 2017 announcement. We keep that date attached so the milestone remains useful as the motorcycle’s history continues.

The next chapter is not ours to predict. Collecting these stories is a way to understand what made the Cub useful in the first place, and to notice how its character carries forward.
